This is such a fabulous conversation.

I can't help but agree with Andrea and how important teaching the love of reading and the imagination it initiates.

Regarding ads, DH and I both came from the evil clutches of the advertising world. We've found these clever dollops of consumerism wonderful teachable moments about the real world, being able to decide things for ourselves and understanding the differences between needs and wants.
No matter how loud we complain or stand in front of our T.V.'s our kids will eventually be bombarded by advertisements and it's best just to help prepare them to make good choices.

You were actually faster with the news than mashable (a very well watched "hounddog" reporter blog on the internet) -- at least I read it here first and was surprised when it came through my ticker and I could say: ah, that's yesterday's news...

I had someone say they were Santa Claus on the phone to one of my kids the other day. He said he was calling to fulfill thier wishes.

Thankfully my kid did not get it. When I got the guy on the phone, I told him in no uncertain terms to NEVER do that again.

You still have time to move out to a little cottage in the woods... NO Santa parades or Toys-R-Us thingys...

Interesting...just the other day Ben brought home a piece of paper with his name written out by a girl in his class. She also wrote another two words, which look like a hyphenated last name of someone (her, maybe? I don't know). And one of two letters were written backwards. It's so endearing!

Mirror image writing and upside writing is very common for pre-readers.

H used to write exactly backwards. Even the letters in the opposite direction. If you it up to a mirror it was correct.

I found it facinating. The human brain is a wonderous thing.
